Crystal is learning to socialise!
November 7th 2007 09:59
Well, I went to my class tonight. It was strange really, there must have been over thirty there and some of them were married. I thought that was decidedly odd and a little disconcerting. I was talking to one guy for a while before I realized he was married and thinking he was quite nice really. After that I was really put off and rather disappointed. It would have been different if his wife had been there too. We were talking before the class started and he only let slip by accident his married status. I hate that.
Anyway the teacher came in soon after and we got organized. She said her name was Susan and she said we looked like a group of very nice people and she was surprised that any of us had difficulties socialising. I suppose her intention was to be encouraging.
She stated that she'd like us to go aroud the group giving our names and then around again and each one having to say the names of the others in turn until eventually all of us had a go.
I hate that, there are always some who can and some who can't and the ones who can't get very embarassed and I feel for them. I think name tags would be a much better idea and then we might actually be able to get to meet the people and absorb the names as we moved around and anyone with a poor memory would not stand out to be censured not that that was the intent of the exercise I am sure but that is often the product.
This tedious task having been completed she then asked if we'd have a chat to the person next to us and then she'd ask each person to say what they had learned about the other.
That was quite interesting as we were such a mixed group varying in many ways including age.
Our next task was to say why we'd come to the class and what we hoped to get out of it. Expectations were very varied but it did show how each of us thought we had a problem of some sort.
She then asked us to move around and chat with people just for a short while and not to spend too long with any one person, in fact she'd ring a bell every three minutes and the whole exercise took us nearly to the end of the class when the teacher seated us asking that we sit next to someone we had not spoken to yet. So it was quite a physically active little group really.
She said she noticed we'd all managed to mix under some direction and now we must learn over the next few weeks to mix in the outside world without such direction. Then she set our homework. I thought that was ever so funny and could barely stop myself laughing.
Our homework was to think about three things we wanted from life that we weren't doing too well with and gave a few examples.
Our hour was up and with a big smile she said she'd be looking forward to seeing us next week with our prepared homework of course and this met with a small degree of laughter all around except from one little mouse there who hardly said anything to anyone and her couterpart a scowling, cynical male who did not mind expressing his ill feelings.
I saw the married man heading in my direction and quickly scampered off before he had time to catch me, I did not want to waste my time with such people.
So now I'm home and Tinkerbelle is happy to see me and as I couldn't give you the picture of the goldfish in the bowl I planned I'll put it on for you tonight as well as a lovely vase of flowers from my garden.
I'm glad the class was over but I'd be happy enough to go again next week but it struck me I was doing all right on my own but maybe we'd get a few more clues as to where to go to meet people socially.
I feel glad to be home, it's so cold tonight, such crazy weather really.

I don't know, just asking. I'm seeing a pattern in your tales.
